Universal Studios Hollywood celebrates 4th of July by extending its Independence Day festivities throughout the weekend from Saturday, July 2 – Monday, July 4, inclusive of dazzling nightly fireworks displays, live music performances, specially themed décor and more, all included in the price of admission to the theme park.

From the moment guests walk along the iconic red carpet and enter the theme park, they will be immersed in July 4thfestivities from themed décor to the sounds of a fife and drum band. Then, beginning nightly at 9:00 p.m., an elaborate fireworks display will splash across the sky, synchronized to a score of Universal-themed music and patriotic favorites from two locations inside of the theme park.

Universal Studios Hollywood continues to provide endless entertainment with one-of-a-kind blockbuster attractions; from the “Jurassic World—The Ride” mega-attraction inspired by the JURASSIC WORLD film series and featuring a stunningly realistic and fully articulating dinosaur, the Indominus rex, to becoming a stray puppy looking to be adopted on Illumination’s award-winning “The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash” ride and getting swept up in the excitement as you enroll in Minion training with Gru, Margo, Edith, Agnes and the mischievous Minions on Illumination’s Despicable Me Minion Mayhem.”

The non-stop excitement continues as guests visit Springfield, U.S.A. and “The Simpsons Ride,” take a behind-the-scenes look at an authentic working movie and television production studio along the world-famous Studio Tour, which now features several electric trams, or experience heart-pounding thrills on Transformers™:  The Ride-3D” and “Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride.” 

Adding to the summer fun, guests can delight in the popular return of The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle,” featuring an incredible light projection experience, while they enjoy the magical land, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™.” The program runs nightly through Sunday, August 14.

Universal Orlando Resort is also celebrating with special in-park activities on Monday, July 4 including live music, meet and greets with favorite characters, themed performers and an exciting pyrotechnics display.

Viewers can sink their teeth into almost 30 hours of original programming and over 60 hours of enhanced content featuring captivating science and stunning visuals of the iconic apex predator. SHARKFEST not only shines a light on the science of sharks, giving audiences a better understanding of the ocean’s most misunderstood predator but also features their true beauty, power and mystery.

For the first time ever, the 10th annual SHARKFEST programming extravaganza can be enjoyed across Disney platforms, including Disney+, Hulu, ABC and ESPN, in addition to National Geographic, Nat Geo WILD and Nat Geo MUNDO, offering a deep dive experience for new viewers and existing SHARKFEST fans alike.

Beginning July 10, EVERY SHARKFEST premiere will be available on Disney+ as they rollout across a myriad of linear networks over the course of the weeks-long event. The best-of SHARKFESTspecials and series throughout the years will also be available on Hulu that day.

This year’s lineup offers a treasure trove of new original content that dives into details on over 15 different shark species and features footage from all over the world, including the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, Australia, Hawaii, South Africa, The Maldives, California, Massachusetts, Maine, Florida and more.

SHARKFEST is the must-sea shark event of the year and sheds light on one of the most fascinating creatures on the planet. What makes this year’s fin-tastic lineup so special and unlike any week-long event is the devotion to factual science paired with the stunning visuals captured by some of the best ocean videographers in the business. 

This year’s SHARKFEST will make waves with something for everyone — from shark novices to shark stans with content across platforms — including the broadcast premiere of SHARK BEACH WITH CHRIS HEMSWORTH on ABC, kid-friendly programming on Disney XD that includes CAMO SHARKS and MAUI SHARK MYSTERY, and the best of SHARKFEST specials on Hulu. 

ESPN is also diving into the fun with the premiere of the ultimate species competition special, GAME OF SHARKS and GREAT WHITE VS. TIGER SHARK. ABC OTV is getting a bite of the action with premieres of the most jaw-dropping specials of the past 10 years in July and August. More accessible than ever, an all-new FAST Channel will have over 80 jaw-dropping episodes available on the ABC app.

National Geographic has also partnered with Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS) to encourage diversity and inclusion in the shark sciences field and inspire the next generation of scientists. This collaboration lends MISS experts — such as Candace Fields, a Ph.D. student studying the population dynamics and geographic population structure of large predators; Carlee Jackson, marine biologist, sea turtle conservationist and shark expert; and Jasmin Graham, who specializes in elasmobranch ecology and evolution — as on-screen talent for this year’s SHARKFEST, as well as consultants for programming and development of shows. 
The scientists and sharks have always been and continue to be the stars of SHARKFEST. 

Our featured shark experts include the following: 
  • Candace Fields, a Ph.D. student studying the population dynamics and geographic population structure of large predators 
  • Carlee Jackson, a marine biologist, sea turtle conservationist and shark expert who is championing diversity in the world of science
  • Jasmin Graham specializes in elasmobranch ecology and evolution. She is the project coordinator for the MarSci-LACE project, which is focused on researching and promoting best practices to recruit, support and retain minority students in marine science 
  • Alison Towner is a senior white shark biologist and Ph.D. student examining driving factors of movement in white sharks
  • Gibbs Kuguru, a Kenyan shark scientist who works with great whites and studies the DNA of sharks
  • Dr. Mike Heithaus, the executive dean of the College of Arts, Sciences & Education (CASE) and professor in the department of biological sciences at Florida International University (FIU)
  • Sara Casareto, a graduate student at Florida International University, working on her doctorate focusing on shark biology and behavior
  • Melissa Cristina Marquez, a Puerto Rican marine biologist and science communicator studying chondrichthyan fishes, such as great white sharks

The San Diego Zoo invites visitors to join in the fun of Nighttime Zoo, a summertime experience that offers guests the chance to explore the Zoo at night, when it’s usually closed to the public. From June 3 through Sept. 5, the Zoo will be open late and filled with live entertainment from a variety of artists, special summer treats, and an opportunity to see wildlife from a different perspective. At every turn, Zoo-goers will be enchanted by musical performers, dancers, acrobats, and crowd favorite Dr. Zoolittle, among others. 

Nighttime Zoo has long been a favorite summer event, but this year it starts even earlier—meaning the Zoo will be open late for 94 adventure-filled nights! ​Nighttime Zoo also provides explorers of all ages the chance to see the new Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp like never before. This 3.2-acre environment blends immersive technology with opportunities to check out extraordinary wildlife species, and it’s designed to serve as a launch pad for budding conservationists. Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is divided into four types of habitats and features the wildlife that live in these areas—Rainforest, Wild Woods, Marsh Meadows and Desert Dunes. The highly-anticipated opening of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood represents the first SUPER NINTENDO WORLD to debut in the United States, designed to transport theme park guests and Nintendo® fans into the world of Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach to be part of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Guests will access SUPER NINTENDO WORLD via the iconic Warp Pipe to enter the land where they will find the “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge” ride located within Bowser’s Castle.

This innovative achievement will propel guests into a multi-dimensional experience that recreates iconic environments from the Mario Kart games and where no two races are alike. “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge” is also one of the most complex rides ever built within the entertainment industry.

The sophisticated ride is a multi-sensory cornucopia of color, sound and movement that invites guests to navigate familiar environs through the creative use and integration of head mounted augmented reality (AR) goggles—a key point of differentiation that distinguishes this ride from other theme park attractions. 

From the depths of the dungeon within Bowser’s Castle, guests will climb aboard stadium-style, four-seat Mario Kart vehicles inspired by the video game, put on their AR goggles …and then with a 3-2-1 GO! signal from Lakitu, they will be off to the races.

The premise is simple but equally inspiring and challenging and will appeal to guests of all ages regardless of gaming experience. As part of Team Mario, guests will steer through courses underwater and in the clouds to compete for the Golden Cup while collecting coins to defeat Team Bowser and win.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is conceived in partnership with Nintendo and the visionaries at Universal Creative to deliver exhilarating entertainment with innovative technological achievements inspired by characters and video games that have appealed to Nintendo fans for generations.
The immersive land will be a visual spectacle of vibrant colors and architectural ingenuity located within a newly expanded area of Universal Studios Hollywood that will feature the groundbreaking ride, “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge,” and interactive areas, to be enjoyed by the whole family, along with themed shopping and dining to enhance the entire experience.

Universal Studios Hollywood and guests continue the countdown to the land’s early 2023 opening with the Feature Presentation retail store, well stocked with SUPER NINTENDO WORLD merchandise such as Mario and Luigi themed apparel and iconic character hats and a selection of plush characters, including Mario, LuigiYoshi and Bowser.
