“The Call of the Wild,” which opens in theaters February 21, may be the coming of age story of Buck the dog, but Harrison Ford brings depth to his character John and takes a journey of his own.

While John in the book by the same name is on a mission to find gold, the movie has this character on a different path.
“I think one of the great things about working with Harrison (Ford) on this was that he developed that whole back story of why in the world is he out in the Yukon on the first place. What is he running from? What happened to him? And, what is his exact relationship with Buck?” director Chris Sanders said. “There was a certain amount that we had in the script, but there was a great deal that needed to be filled in and developed.”
This parallel journey John is on helps bring Buck and him together. The similarities help audiences make that connection between the characters and establish a bond which drives much of the emotion of the movie.
“I took the project as a father, as a member of a family, it was a story that I thought would make a good family film,” Ford said. “The character was developed beyond the character’s presence in the book. To have a story, that in many ways parallels Buck’s.”
Both John and Buck are growing and finding the courage to grow passed their problems.

John became a wonderful character that feels real and believable.

Ford acted alongside a human playing a dog and was able to convincingly create a connection.
“It was a little weird,” Ford said. “Terry Notary, who stood in for the dog, is an accomplished actor and a gifted Cirque du Solei gymnast. He developed the skill to move like a dog and to help everyone organize their eyeline, where they are looking. For me also, I had the opportunity to create an emotional relationship with the character that Terry Notary was playing. We crossed some biological lines to get there, but it became second nature.”
Ford said he enjoys having that challenge and that’s what is fun about what he does and collaborate with others to take on a project.

The storytelling, choosing what stories to tell and finding what’s important to tell is what Ford said helps him choose his projects.

This project has such a positive message and was something Ford wanted to be a part of.

“The Call of the Wild” may tell the journey of Buck the dog, but director Chris Sanders has his own tale to tell about Buckley, the dog who Buck is modeled after.

Sometimes things just fall into place, even when having a rocky start.

Sanders said he had been looking for a dog to model Buck after, but he just couldn’t find the right mixture of breeds.

After a long search, filming started and Sanders settled for a a Bernese Mountain dog that was adequate. Shortly after filming started problems with the dogs being predominantly black and having so many night scenes.

Sanders’ wife, Jessica Steal Sanders, caught site of a dog on Pet Finder that matched the breeds the Buck would be and, surprisingly, the dog’s name was Buckley.

The dog was found in Kansas.

To get Buckley to set Sander’s wife drove 2 days to pick him up and get him to set.

Buckley was a bit young, but was the model for Buck and once he grew more the model was adjusted to reflect the changes.

Jessica not only brought Chris his lead dog for his first live-action movie, but a new pet as well.

Chris took Buckley with him to “The Call of the Wild” premiere in Hollywood to walk the red carpet.

Having come from animation, Chris was happy to work on a film where the lead character would be a computer generated image, but that was not the only part which proved to be beneficial.

Being able to draw gave Chris the opportunity to storyboard most of the movie shot by shot.
“I was working with Glenn Derry, who ran a special effects house we were working with, and I said, ‘Do you have a piece of paper I’ll just draw it,’ so he gave me a piece of paper and I drew these panels the way I thought the scene should unfold,” Chris said. “He said, ‘Hey, you can do that?’ I said, ‘yeah, I come from story boarding.’ He said, ‘Why aren’t you just doing that all the time?’ I said, ‘you’re right maybe I should do it all the time,” so I started story boarding more and more.”
Chris storyboarded scenes shot by shot and was able to show exactly what he wanted captured.

His creativity along with the cast and crew he worked with helped create a beautiful movie with positive messages of friendship, kindness and perseverance.

While Harrison Ford is the major human star of “The Call of the Wild,” which opens in theaters February 21, actress Cara Gee gets the role of a character which in the book, by the same name, was originally male.

Even as the character is changed to a female, François is still a strong character which is pivotal to the growth of Buck the dog whom the story follows.

Gee said that using the script, the source material and all the resources on set helped her create the wonderful character she was able to portray.
“I feel extremely proud as an indigenous woman to be playing playing this role,” Gee said. “I got to work with a woman named Carol, who is a member of the Tinglit nation and they are the people who are indigenous to that land. She was a cultural advisor on the project. Her granny was a musher in the ‘20s and ‘30s, so that’s a very similar time frame. To know that there were, I mean, the indigenous people of that region invented dogsledding. To be a part of that story telling tradition was really important to me.”
The soul of the movie attracted Gee to the project and she shared how it also attracted so much magic to the project.

The cast and crews dedication brought a whole new level to it and the cast was really able to emerge themselves into the world of “The Call of the Wild” and into Buck’s journey.
Gee said, “When I was cast, I was like ‘oh my god, I’m going to have to look a grown man in the face and pretend that he’s a dog,’ but he committed so fully to the role that I could look in his eyes and he became Buck.”
Motions capture actor Terry Notary was played Buck while shooting and Gee said that Notary’s expressions gave Buck his personality on screen.

The storybook quality of the movie is a remarkable aspect which Gee said was amazing and a testament to the amazing visual artists.

As this was her first big project Gee was able to learn and get experience from the amazing cast and crew.
“This story is beautiful,” Gee said. “Chris Sanders our director, if you’ve seen any of his other films, there is so much magic in them. So, to get to tell this story in that way was a real privilege as an honor. I’m so proud of how it turned out.”
Gee said she was really thrilled with this coming of age story. It’s one of the aspects which enticed her on the project.
